Cov Cath & Holmes Meet Again With Trip to State on the Line
Nine days ago Covington Catholic and Holmes met in the finals of the 35th District tournament and battled to a dramatic finish in which Nick Ruthsatz nailed a half-court shot at the buzzer giving the Colonels a 73-72 win.
Now, Holmes hopes for a better outcome as the teams meet again in the Ninth Region championship game with a trip to Rupp Arena and the Kentucky Sweet 16 on the line.
The Bulldogs had another dramatic ending to their game Saturday in the regional semifinals where Cooper had a 2-point lead with just a few seconds left before Holmes sophomore star James Bolden sunk a 3-pointer with under three seconds to play. Earlier Saturday, Covington Catholic had little trouble with Newport, winning its semifinal match-up 63-48.
Both schools were bounced in the first round of the past two regional tournament but this year one will be going to the biggest tournament in Kentucky.
Sunday's final will be the third meeting of the season between the Holmes Bulldogs (30-2) and the Covington Catholic Colonels (27-6). Holmes beat the Colonels in Park Hills 71-60 back on January 8.
